I slept and dreamt    that  life was a joy.

I awoke and saw that   life was service.

I acted and behold!  Service was joy.

A note from Dana;

Many of my clients know the extent of which I go to in order to explain session goals and techniques I employ and to help them understand my observations. I am known to bring out anatomy books, charts and even a skeleton on occasion. I routinely provide current research papers on any given topic. Even though at times some issues may be controversial, I believe in providing the mind with an active process to stimulate thought and dialog. I also believe an educated patient has the best chances of success with prevention and recovery from injury or illness. Many people are coming to the realization their doctors do not have all the answers, that medications alone aren't the answer, that wellness is inclusive of multiple factors. It is within this theme that we present this newsletter. In the context of a dynamic newsletter we encourage your feedback and inquiries. You may contact us through our website with questions about the material we present or request for information you would like to see. This newsletter is by subscription (free of charge). As a current client you have been added to our mail list. You may opt out at anytime by contacting us. Your privacy is respected. We will never sell or share your information at anytime.

So sit back and enjoy, read what you want and leave the rest. We hope what we provide is interesting and helpful.

Yours in wellness,

Dana

Exercising in 3-D

The reason I hear from most people as to why they do not exercise regularly is a shortage of time. No doubt life is busy for most people but regular exercise is the simplest, least expensive, and most beneficial thing we can do towards maintaining and improving our health.

Now if you have the time there is nothing wrong with exercising for an hour or more with a range of gym equipment and cardio machines, unless not having the time to do a full circuit is preventing you from exercising at all. A good alternative is a short series of exercises that will give you the most results for your time. This can be called Low Impact – Big Bang exercises. Low impact, meaning these exercises do not put undue strain on the joints and structures the way jogging or excessive weight training might. Big Bang means you are getting exercise, strength training, neurological improvement, and flexibility all in one exercise. It does all this by exercising you in 3 planes of movement at once. We are 3-dimensional beings living in a 3-dimensional world. When you exercise on a strength-training machine, say a leg press or pullover machine, you are exercising in a single plane of movement. You are sitting on a machine that is bolted to the floor. The machine governs your direction of movement while you are strapped into position. Of course this can be beneficial if you are trying to isolate and build that particular muscle group, but the rest of your body is stabilized and not being challenged. Now imagine exercising on an unstable surface such as a large gymnastic ball (Swiss Ball) in comparison. The simplest of exercises become extremely beneficial because your whole body is working at once, 3 dimensionally. Your core muscles are stabilizing your torso while your legs, arms, and neurological system are being challenged and strengthened. With these types of exercises it doesn’t take long at all to realize benefits. By doing a brief warm-up followed with 3-4 exercises 2-3 times a week, a significant improvement can be realized by most anyone. Exercises can range from simply sitting and lightly bouncing on the ball while alternating leg and arm movements to very complex exercises requiring a great deal of strength, coordination and balance. Free weights can also be incorporated into the exercise routines as well.

The real benefit of this type of exercising is that it develops strength, balance, and coordination for activities of daily living that carries over to the type of movements you make normally. This improves posture and in many cases these types of exercises can reduce or eliminate chronic back and neck pain. Swiss Ball exercising also improves reaction time that could save you from a serious fall. It is for this very reason Swiss Ball training has rapidly gained popularity in rehabilitation clinics, hospitals, gyms and homes for the past 30 years. Increasingly athletes, golf pros, tennis players, are using ball exercises because they gain faster reflexes and a better functioning muscular-skeletal system making them more competitive and less prone to injury.

A good quality burst-resistant gymnastic ball can be purchased at most any sports shop. I highly recommend buying the very best quality available. Many Swiss Ball exercise DVD’s are available however taking a Swiss Ball class or incorporating the help of a personal trainer to get you started correctly provide gain you with the most benefit.

So get the most from your exercise time in a fun way with big-bang exercises on the Swiss Ball.

Sure, You'll Get Older.  So What?

She began lifting weights to get strong enough to carry 50-pound bags.  Today Morjorie Newlin lifts 100 pounds and is an award-winning bodybuilder...
Oh, and she's 78 !!!!

Six years ago at 72, Morjorie Newlin won her first bodybuilding contest.  "When the judge announced her age, the audience went haywire", recalls her former trainer, bob Rivers.  "I thought they were applauding because the old lady made it onto the stage", jokes Newlin.

"I just can't go and find somebody to ask for help every time I want to lift a finger", says Morjorie Newlin, explaining why she took up bodybuilding.

We were at a gym in Philadelphia where Newlin was training for the National Physique Committee's Philadelphia Bodybuilding Championships.  Newlin sat down at the leg-press machine, bracing her feet against a platform connected to 180 pounds of cast iron.  She pushed it back and forth 12 times, then paused and did three more sets of 12.  Not bad for a 78-year-oldgrandmother of four who started weightlifting just six years ago.

Newlin, who has won 25 trophies so far, said it was never her intention to bare her sculptured muscles in public.  She began lifting weights to become strong enough to handle everyday tasks, like keeping her cat supplied with kitty litter.  A few years ago, her supermarket had a sale on 50-pound bags, but Newlin couldn't find anyone to lift them off the shelf.  That's no longer a problem.  Nor is the upkeep of her two-story home, "I always felt I could do whatever I want to," she said, "and now I know I can".  Newlin shovels snow, cuts grass and hauls a 50-pound fan up from the basement every spring.  "I couldn't do all this before without being worn out."  Newlin always enjoyed exercising.  After finishing her workday as a registered nurse, she'd often stop into a health club for a stint on the treadmill or stationary bike.  But after retiring in 1987 to care for her terminally ill husband, Newlin decided to take up weight training. She knew resistance training with free weights and machines builds strength, stamina and endurance, and it prevents osteoporosis.

One day Newlin entered Rivers Gym, a Mecca for serious bodybuilders, then owned by Bob Rivers.  It wasn't long before Rivers spotted her commitment and potential.  "Rain, shine, cold weather - - I'd look up and she'd be there," he recalled.

Rivers took charge of Newlin's training.  At first he was concerned about pushing her too hard, but as Newlin's strength increased weekly, Rivers noticed she could perform feats that people many years younger couldn't.  "It was amazing to watch a 72-year-old body in that

condition," he noted.  Rivers decided that it was time for Newlin to compete, but when he showed her the teeny-weeny bikini she'd be wearing to display her muscles, she said, "No way!!"  Then she reconsidered.

"I knew the contest meant a lot to him," said Newlin, "so I thought, 'I'll do this once - - but I'm nhot going to do it again!'"  She won.  "When the judge announced her age, the audience went haywire," Rivers recalled.  Newlin had a different take: "I thought they were applauding because the old lady made it onto the stage", she joked.

After that victory, Rivers stepped up Newlin's training, mindful to constantly ask her how she felt.  "She was bench- pressing 65 pounds when she was 73 years old and 85 pounds at 74," Rivers said.  When Rivers retired, Newlin, then 75, was doing squats with a 100-pound barbell across her shoulders.

Newlin credits her mother for teaching her to set goals and achieve them.  Born in Philadelphia to immigrants form Barbados, Newlin lost her father when she was 5.  Her mother worked as a seamstress to support Morjorie and her two sisters.  Newlin earned a nursing degree and married in 1946.  She and her husband, Raymond, a railroad electrician, staggered their work hours so one of them was always at home with their four children.

Morjorie Newlin's Exercise Tips:
Can someone 80 or even older start a fitness program?  Anyone -- with a doctor's approval -- can increase his or her strength, says the 78-year-old bodybuilding champion Morjorie Newlin.

bullet

Start with two weights -- 2-1/2 pounds each -- she advises, or two cans of soup or two small bottles of water.  "Move your arms up and down until you're comfortable and feel you can do no more.  Your arms will feel stronger after a time."

bullet

"Don't try to do too much," Newlin says.  She warms up on a treadmill before working out with weights four times a week.

Book Review: Eat, Move, and Be Healthy by Paul Chek.

Paul Chek is the founder of the C.H.E.K. Institute in California. He is a highly respected Holistic Practitioner, Neuromuscular Therapist and corrective exercise specialist with an extensive list of credentials. Mr. Chek has trained and worked with some of the very best teachers in the field. He has developed a unique approach to wellness and education that ties in concepts from each of these fields.

Out of the many books I have read on wellness and fitness I am most impressed by this one. As an on-going student of the C.H.E.K. institute I incorporate the methods he teaches into my practice. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting an in-depth, rounded approach to wellness.

"This book does not have to be read cover to cover. Just as each individual is different, so too will be the way you read this book. The questionnaires in chapter 2 will guide you through the rest of the book, so you can select and read the chapters that are most applicable and interesting to you. In this way, you will create a customized plan of action". (excerpt from inside cover by Paul Chek).

I will be stocking this book shortly. Call or email me if interested in purchasing a copy. Soon I hope to have a shopping cart on my site for this and other great products.
