The Importance Of Self-Care

Every year at this time I see a great number of my clients and patients presenting with stress related complaints. However this year I am also noticing a disturbing trend. I am seeing people schedule less often thus presenting with more intensity in their complaints when they do come in. I believe this may be a combination of economy and personal scheduling as this time of year creates challenges to both these areas. What concerns me is this is precisely the time when self-care becomes all the more important.

The body reacts to all stress in the same way. Stress can be external such as finances, relationships, family, work, or even "good " stress such as skiing down a mountain. Stress can be internal such as illness, injury, poor nutrition, chronic pain.

The Rain Barrel Effect

Initially our body can withstand the various stressors placed upon it but over time the body's ability to adapt becomes diminished. Like a rain barrel, drop by drop it fills but eventually it overflows. Things that were not such a challenge before now become monumental. In this state a simple cold or flu, a change in work schedule, or other seemingly minor challenge can push the body over the edge into a downward spiraling progression of not feeling well or chronic pain issues.

Complaints that are common get mistaken for "normal". As a person gets older complaints of arthritis, high blood pressure, sleep issues, etc. are said to be "normal for your age". This is not true. Traditional cultures have shown the body is designed to last well into later years without these degenerative conditions.

Emotional stress creates physiological changes to the body that further increases emotional stress. Physical stress can induce emotional stress. Once in place a vicious circle can be created. Often times medications are used to suppress the symptoms but unfortunately do not get to the causal level.

Pain is a sign of mal-adaptation. Ignoring it will not make it go away.

Massage is one way to help break the pain cycle. Studies have repeatedly shown massage to calm the nervous system, strengthen the immune system, relieve pain, stimulate endorphins (the feel good chemicals), induce a state of relaxation and sense of well-being.

Massage also stimulates blood circulation to improve the supply of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues and helps the lymphatic system to flush away waste products.                                 ©DMT 2010

Making massage one of your regular self-care priorities is a great step in the supporting your health naturally.

Many massage therapist will tell you there becomes a point where we want to be the one on the table. We learn early on that if we do not take regular care of ourselves we are not much good for anyone else. If we ignore this basic reality our work and health suffers. This is true for most everyone whether it is the homemaker, the office worker, or anyone else. If we don't take care of ourselves we are not as able to be helpful to those depending on us.

The human body has a remarkable ability to heal and rebuild. Each cell was born with the innate intelligence to rebuild and be well given the right environment. All it ask is that we provide the optimal environment for it to do what it does best.
